Malcolm Smith BSc, CEng, MIET
Malcolm is the founder and Managing Director of Novi Systems Ltd as well as its Chief Designer. Novi, which has been operating since 1993, began specialising in inhaler testing with Fisons, producing their first pMDI shaker followed by the first work on automating the Andersen Cascade Impactor. Production of the first Ictus, the automated Andersen for pMDI, was completed for Astra in 1995. Since then, Malcolm has continued to lead development of the Ictus to meet the demands of customers around the world. Developments include compatibility with dry powder inhalers and nebulisers and a programme of continuous improvement to take advantage of the latest technology available.
Malcolm has many contacts in this field and calls on the best engineers and consultants to support Novi’s work as demand dictates. Many of these people have been working with Novi for many years in a very stable arrangement.
Malcolm is a graduate of Electrical Engineering, Leeds University, 1971 and has been a Chartered Engineer since 1977.
Adam Smith MEng Cantab, MIET, MBCS
Adam is an experienced systems engineer, project manager and business analyst.
Adam is Malcolm’s son and has worked at Novi for significant periods throughout his career. His experience at Novi takes in most aspects of the business: from designing, building and integrating elements of the systems through to project management and coordination of GAMP and other quality assurance activities.
Adam’s work for other companies includes: Communications, Command and Control and Information Systems (C4IS) Research Programme Manager (Helyx SIS Ltd), responsible for an annual budget of £1m delivered by consortia of partners and subcontractors; Design Authority (Thales Avionics Ltd) responsible for developing an avionic secure communication module now in service on a fleet of fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
Adam has a 2:1 MEng MA (Hons) Electrical and Information Sciences Tripos, from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and holds PRINCE2 project management qualifications.
Nick Dynes is the founder and Director of N&S Design Solutions Ltd which currently employs three design engineers.
N&S Design have completed the mechanical design of many projects including a range of new design security door locks for a major security company, pharmaceutical test machinery and special purpose machinery including a production line machine for the production of concrete floor reinforcing strips.
Nick has worked extensively with Novi Systems Ltd since 2004 on the mechanical design of the Ictus system as well as some of Novi’s bench top automation systems.
Nick has a HND in Mechanical Engineering which he passed with two distinctions.
Mike Felstead CEng MIMechE
Mike Felstead is the Director of Ideas Realised Ltd, a company providing engineering design and product development consultancy services to inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
An enthusiastic, skilled and highly experienced Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Mike has a 17 year track record in new product development and commercialisation. He has extensive engineering project management experience, advanced 3D CAD skills, and an in-depth knowledge of additive manufacturing and 3D printing techniques.
Mike has undertaken well over 100 client consultations; from short-term referrals, through to £1.2M TSB funded projects with long timescales and multi-partner deliverables.
John Rowbottom BSc
John is a Database Administrator with over fifteen years experience in the software industry working with relational databases of various types and specialising in Oracle technologies. John has worked with Novi since 2002 on the design, construction and maintenance of databases for Ictus and other Novi automation systems.
John has a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from Sheffield University.
He has had long term relationships with various companies including Close Brothers, Capital One, OutoKumpu, and UfI / LearnDirect.
Phil is an experienced IT professional with an in-depth understanding of analysis, design and development practice. Phil’s knowledge and practical experience with cutting edge methods, tools and technologies, has enabled the effective delivery of many large-scale critical projects and programs.
Phil has worked as a developer and software architect in many different business sectors including the oil and gas, defence and banking industries. His focus is always on improving the way in which software is developed, whilst designing innovative and pragmatic solutions.
Vin joined the team in 2014 after completing his MSc in at the University of Birmingham. He has a background in electronics and instrumentation. Vin is our Head of Sales and Business Development.
His experience includes working with automated speech recognition systems using hidden Markov modeling, and he has also developed a low cost eye tracker for interaction in a virtual environment.
Vin has a BEng in Electronic Instrumentation from Anna University and an MSc in Interactive Digital Media from the University of Birmingham. He holds certifications in C, C#, C++, VB.net, ASP.net.
Jules joined Novi in the summer of 2014 having spent his time after leaving the University of Nottingham working for various fundraising initiatives. At Novi, Jules manages our supply chain and is responsible for order fulfilment.
His experience includes working on multi-million pound fundraising initiatives and work as a market analyst and forecaster for an aerospace multinational.
James graduated as an engineer from Cardiff University in 2016. After working with Novi full time during a year out from his studies in 2014-15, he joined us as a graduate engineer in July 2016.
Hardworking and dedicated, he has learnt huge amount at Novi. James works closely with Nick and Malcolm on initial design and is a real asset in the workshop.
